India Standard Time

India uses a single time zone across the entire country, set at UTC+5:30. The half-hour offset is one reason conversions to India are easy to get wrong when done by hand.

India does not observe daylight saving time, so the difference to cities such as New York or London changes twice a year — not because India moves, but because they do.

IST is ambiguous: it can also mean Irish Standard Time or Israel Standard Time. Naming the country avoids confusion.
